Brief Church Mission Statement:

We are a Christ-centered, inviting community, empowered by the Holy Spirit to be and make disciples, that we may glorify God and reflect his love.

We believe that every Christian is a minister to the world. Our church seeks to prepare all of its people for their ministries and supports them as they are sent forth into the world.

Pursuing this mission in the challenging context of current denominational, societal, and cultural debates, we are guided by these affirmations:
  • We affirm the unique lordship of Jesus Christ.
  • We affirm the authority of scripture.
  • We affirm the guidance of the confessions.
  • We affirm our love for and fellowship with sister and brother Presbyterians.
We do not all agree on everything, but we agree that we love Jesus, and want to know and love him more; that we love the Bible, and deeply want to hear and understand God’s Word; that we love being involved in the kingdom work of our Savior; and that we love each other, striving to “do everything in love . . . as Christ first loved us.” We are filled with excitement, enthusiasm and anticipation as we continue on the road God has set before us as individuals and as a congregation.

Narrative Questions:

Please write a brief description of your church programs or accomplishments.

Nearing our 90th anniversary, Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church has developed from a family church to a program church of 600 diverse members. As such, WCPC depends on excellent professional staff and lay leaders to maintain programs for members of all ages, and hopes to attract new members by the vitality of these programs. Given our location adjacent to Whitworth University, the relationship between the school and the church remains among our most significant distinctives and opportunities.

A recent survey indicates WCPC is largely in a developmental stage. We spend most of our time and energy developing and maintaining effective programs, making regular evaluations and incremental changes based on those evaluations. We strive to keep our programs relevant to the changing needs of our members and attractive to visitors looking for a church home. That said, there are growing numbers in our congregation who aspire to a more transitional approach to ministry and would look to a future of experimentation as we seek to reach our neighbors for Christ and the Kingdom.

Our ministry programs are largely focused in five areas:
  • the spiritual formation of children and adults
  • worship (presently a traditional service in the sanctuary and two contemporary services in our
  • multipurpose space)
  • pastoral care of our members
  • missions, both global and local
  • a weekday preschool and daycare that is growing and recently integrated into our mission.

Describe what gifts, skills and experiences your congregation possesses to fulfill its mission.

WCPC is Christ-centered, biblically faithful and mission-minded.

Adjacent to one of the few PCUSA-affiliated colleges or universities that remains intentionally and distinctively Christian (a member of the CCCU), we seek to involve the Whitworth University community in all aspects of our congregational life.

We value intellectual inquiry and biblical education and are blessed to learn from a number of university faculty and others who regularly offer adult education programs.

We are blessed with strong lay leadership and many members are generous with their time and resources.

We have a long history of service and outreach, and are currently involved with numerous missions and ministries, both PCUSA-sponsored and ecumenical, from central Spokane to Ghana, Guatemala, and the Philippines.

We consider worship central to who we are. We offer a variety of worship experiences in different venues.

Our staff works together to lead the congregation with vision, skill, love and commitment.

Members participate in more than 35 small groups, in which disciple-making relationships and practices are created through spiritual formation.

Our ministry to children represents a significant investment in the future.

We benefit from the strong commitment of scores of individuals who provide meals, transportation and spiritual and emotional support to those in need.

We are good stewards of our grounds and aging facility, devoting many hours to maintenance, repair and beautification.

We live within our budget.

What are the key theological issues of our church and society that are reflected in the ministry of your congregation?

God calls us into relationship with Him and with one another. At WCPC, this call is expressed through an understanding that we are part of numerous communities: local, regional, and global, communities of faith, and the social and political communities in which God places His church. Addressing the needs present in these communities requires attention to God’s direction, prayer, an often delicate balancing of priorities, and above all God’s grace.

WCPC has long supported mission efforts to meet some of the physical, social, and spiritual needs of people in our city, our region, and around the world.

WCPC continues to strive for balance in the areas of inclusiveness and the need for fidelity to scriptural teaching. Thus, we seek to avoid either of the extremes toward which our culture seems to be gravitating: a tolerance that demands the inclusion of everything and allows the church to stand for nothing, or a narrow and loveless bigotry that seeks isolation and is terrified of difference. Our task is to present the truth of the gospel in a way that transcends political and social ideologies.

WCPC acknowledges the need simultaneously to nurture the spiritual life of those in the church and to remain relevant to those outside the church. We struggle to balance a commitment to two millennia of church teaching and tradition, along with our strengths as a program church, with the need to present the good news of Jesus Christ in ways that are fresh and engaging to the world around us.
